Treasure
of the Rudras
(Rudra no Hihou)
review by Shim
Why?
It's a square RPG with a quite unique concept, and it's one
I haven't played before ^.^
What?
Treasure of the Rudras (Rudra no Hihou) is an RPG for the SNES.
Although this game is standard RPG fare, you know wander
around the map, kill monsters, gain level and gold, buy equipment
etc. etc. but thats only part of it. RnH has one of the most
unique magic systems I have ever seen, and have yet to see
in a game. Instead of players learning spells as they level
up they learn mantras from people, in treasure chests etc.
These mantras can be combined to perform different spells,
with the curret AGTP patch you can have up to a 16 character
spell name which is great when most mantra parts are only
2 or 3 letters. So for everyone tired of the typical Squaresoft
Fire, Fira, Firaga type processions why not not play this
game and use AKiKaaGigaTouTome, or my favourite AGigaLefNa
(Heavy healing to all for 8 mp ^.~). A side note is that
their are no unique skills. Everyone uses the 'community'
spell pool.
Characters in this game
are standard fare, you have your heroine searching for
her parents, a soldier searching for his mentor, and a young
sorceror(ress?) searching for the stolen holy grail. Now
this may seem like a good team and all.... but wait theres
more none of them ever end up in the same party. Thats right,
this game has three different scenarios, each character has
his or her own scenario with different storylines and plots.
Sometimes during the adventure the characters will cross
paths and more plot development (*coughmayhemcough*) will
insue. Each character gets their own team of adventurers
and progresses through the game.
Sounds easy so far? Sure you can make ultra powerful spells
right off the bat and rape everything in sight but theirs
a catch. You only get 16 game days to win.. go over time
and kapow end of the world. Now each character gets their
own set of 16 days and you can go through them in any order.
5 days for character 1, 6 days for character 2 etc. Also
your in luck, time only progresses after perfoming certain
events, like fighting a boss. The bosses themselves range
from easy to horribly hard, One boss shown in the screenshot
above has a hideously high def and mdef, 6 days irl and I
still haven't figured out how to beat him >>;;;;.
This game has it's pros and it's cons, at first glance it
may seem like normal squaresoft fare but if you take the
time to actually play it I believe you'll be pleasantly surprised
at how fun it actually is.
Graphics - 9/10 Although it's your typical sprite fare,
you get completly different magic animations depending on
the word combo in the spell.
Sound - 8/10 Typical 16 bit sound, not the best Squaresofts
produced but better then most out there.
Controls - 7/10 Controls are fairly solid, it's not hard
to figure out what does what.. Only problem is that the only
way to switch between the different chars is to die and go
back to the save screen.
Gameplay - 9/10 Solid gameplay, It's a bit short and replayability
is low but it's a solid game to waste a few days
Overall - 9/10 A fun enjoyable playable game, What more
can I say? Go out and play it now =*^.^*=
