Captain Tsubasa
review by Jason
Why?
The Captain Tsubasa soccer manga was and still is extremely popular. There was some anime based on the comics but they never took off.
What?
A menu-based RPG soccer game. Your players have stats, they can raise levels and they have points allocated to super-moves. The game-play is all menu-driven, for example, when tackled the game pauses to let you choose what to do. It's funky, I grew up with it (this game has loads of sequels) and grew to love it.
This is one of the few Captain Tsubasa games that adheres to the manga's plotlines - go with Tsubasa all the way to the World Cup!
If you're interested in a menu-based soccer game, I'd recommend trying Captain Tsubasa 5 for the SNES, because it's a little more accessible and intuitive then, but know that this is the old-school original!
